Taking Complete Refuge at the Feet of Mā Devī
There is a natural tendency within us to seek support in more than one place. We turn towards the Divine with devotion, yet at the same time, we continue to depend on what is around us. We rely on situations, people, abilities, and outcomes to feel secure. When these seem stable, we feel supported, and when they shift, a quiet uncertainty arises. Without noticing it fully, our dependence becomes divided. The heart, in its simplicity, is not meant to be divided in this way, it longs to rest fully, without holding on in different directions.
That completeness begins the moment we come to the feet of Mā Devī.
To live at Her feet is to gently recognise the difference between partial and complete refuge. When we depend partly on what is changing and partly on what is unchanging, the experience remains mixed. We may feel some peace, but it does not remain steady. Slowly, as understanding deepens, we begin to see that complete peace can arise only when our reliance becomes whole. When this is seen, even briefly, something within begins to align.
The disturbance we feel does not come from lack of support, but from divided dependence. We hold on to what is familiar, even when we know it cannot remain. At the same time, we turn towards the Divine, but without letting go fully. In this way, the mind remains uncertain. It does not rest completely anywhere. Even though we seek peace, we hesitate to release what we depend on. This creates a subtle tension within.
But when we turn towards Mā Devī, something begins to shift within.
We start to see that Her presence is not limited or distant. She is not something to be reached, She is already present. The more we turn inward, the more we begin to sense that there is a quiet presence supporting our very existence. There is a simple feeling of “I am,” and beneath it, a deeper stillness that remains unchanged. In that stillness, Her presence is quietly felt.
In the spirit of the teachings, what is real is not something that comes and goes, but something that is always present. When everything is seen as Her prasāda, even the need to depend on outer supports begins to reduce. The heart slowly begins to understand: “I am not here to hold on in many places… I am here to rest fully at Her feet.”
Our restlessness continues when we keep one part of ourselves tied to what is temporary. Even after seeing its limitations, we return to it again and again. But when we begin to trust what is steady, even gently, this pattern begins to loosen. There is a quiet recognition: “This alone is enough.” In that understanding, the heart becomes lighter.
To live like this does not require forcing surrender, it requires clarity.
We continue to live, act, and relate as before. But inwardly, we begin to depend less on what is changing and more on what is steady. Slowly, a quiet strength begins to arise, not forced, but natural. A strength that remains even in uncertainty, a strength that quietly supports us through every experience.
Today’s Sādhanā — Resting in Complete Refuge: Today, gently notice where your dependence feels divided. In those moments, pause and turn within. Ask softly, “Where am I truly resting?” Let this question bring clarity. Before any action, inwardly say, “Mā Devī, I place everything at Your feet.” Let your actions continue, but let your holding soften. At least a few times during the day, close your eyes briefly and feel, “I am at the feet of Mā Devī. I rest completely.” Do not force this feeling, just return to it gently.
Inner Bhāva: Do not try to force surrender; allow it to deepen through understanding. Let your heart move towards what is steady. Offer both your trust and your hesitation at Her feet. Even if the mind holds again, return gently. Each return deepens your refuge.
Reflection for Today: Did I remain divided in my dependence today, or did I take complete refuge at the feet of Mā Devī?
Gentle Reminder: Come back to Her feet again and again, not by trying to control, but by letting go of partial holding. Nothing is ours, everything is Hers, and in that surrender, strength becomes complete.
