Govinda Dāmodara Stotram

Bṛhaspati said: “O King, a person is born alone, and alone indeed departs from this world. Alone one crosses life’s difficult passages, and alone one goes to an unfortunate state (as the result of one’s own actions). Father, mother, brother, son, teacher, relatives, kinsmen, and friends; all are ultimately unable to accompany or assist one (after leaving this body). Having abandoned the dead body, regarding it as no more than a piece of wood or a lump of earth, people weep for only a short while; then they turn away and depart. When that body has been abandoned by them, Dharma alone follows the departed being. Therefore, human beings should always cultivate and practice Dharma, for it alone serves as their true companion (even beyond this life).”
Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva,
Chapter 111, Verses 21–24.
