Day 11

Not Settling for Less at the Feet of Śrī Śiva

There is a quiet tendency within us to feel satisfied when something small is gained. A little comfort, a little success, or a little recognition can bring a sense of ease, and for a while, the mind feels content. But this contentment does not remain. Soon, another desire arises, and the search begins again. Even when something feels enough in the moment, it does not stay that way for long. This creates a subtle cycle within, a movement of gaining, settling, and then seeking again. The heart, in its simplicity, is not meant to remain in this cycle. It is not seeking small and passing satisfaction; it is seeking something that is complete, something that does not fade.

That clarity begins the moment we come to the feet of Śrī Śiva.

To live at His feet is to gently recognise what we are truly seeking. It is the understanding that whatever we gain in the world, however meaningful it may seem, is limited. It may bring comfort or joy for some time, but it does not end the search. Slowly, as understanding deepens, we begin to see that settling for less is not natural to us. The longing within us is for something that is full, something that leaves nothing more to be desired.

The restlessness we experience does not come from lack of achievement, but from stopping too early. We receive something, and instead of seeing its limitation, we hold on to it as if it is complete. But after some time, the same feeling of incompleteness returns. This shows us that what we have accepted is not the highest. In this way, the search continues, but without clear direction, it becomes scattered and tiring.

But when we turn towards Śrī Śiva, something begins to settle within. We start to see that what we are truly seeking is not partial, but whole. He alone is complete, unchanging, and ever-present. When we connect ourselves to Him, even briefly, the urge to settle for less begins to reduce. There is a quiet recognition: “What I seek cannot be small.” In that understanding, the heart becomes steady.

In the Bhagavad Gītā, it is said that upon attaining that, nothing higher remains to be gained. This points to a completeness that does not leave any gap behind. When everything is seen as His prasāda, even the world is no longer approached with expectation. The heart slowly begins to understand: “I am not here to stop at partial happiness… I am here to move towards what is complete.” Our tendency to settle arises when we lose sight of what is truly possible. We accept temporary peace or small understanding and feel that it is enough. But deep within, the longing remains. When we begin to honour this longing, instead of ignoring it, the direction of life becomes clear.

To live like this does not require rejecting anything outwardly, it requires a gentle firmness within. We continue to live, act, and experience life as before. But inwardly, we do not stop at what is incomplete. Slowly, a quiet determination begins to arise, not forced, but natural. A determination to move towards what is real, a determination that quietly supports us in every step.

Today’s Sādhanā — Not Settling for Less: Today, gently observe where the mind feels satisfied with something small. In those moments, pause and turn within. Ask softly, “Is this truly complete?” Let this question bring clarity. Before any action, inwardly say, “Śrī Śiva, let me not stop at what is partial.” Let your actions continue, but let your seeking remain clear. At least a few times during the day, close your eyes briefly and feel, “I am at the feet of Śrī Śiva. I seek what is complete.” Do not force this feeling, just return to it gently.

Inner Bhāva: Do not reject what comes, but do not stop there. Let your heart remain aligned with what is highest. Offer both your satisfaction and your longing at His feet. Even if the mind settles again, return gently. Each return strengthens your clarity.

Reflection for Today: Did I settle for what is temporary today, or did I continue towards the highest at the feet of Śrī Śiva?

Gentle Reminder: Come back to His feet again and again, not by seeking more, but by not stopping at less. Nothing is lacking, everything is His, and in that understanding, the path becomes clear.
