Living Only in Her Shelter at the Feet of Mā Devī
There is a natural tendency within us to seek support in many places. We turn towards people, relationships, wealth, and situations, hoping they will give us stability. For a while, they seem to support us, and we feel at ease. But slowly, they begin to change. They move, they shift, and at some point, they separate. Yet, even after seeing this again and again, we return to them for support. The heart, in its simplicity, is not meant to be scattered in many directions, it longs to rest fully in one place that does not change. When it finds that place, a deep quietness begins to arise.
That resting begins the moment we come to the feet of Mā Devī.
To live at Her feet is to gently recognise the difference between divided dependence and true refuge. Just as true love rests in one alone, devotion too becomes steady when it is not spread across many supports. When we begin to see that everything in the world is constantly moving, a quiet understanding arises, nothing here can be our final shelter. Slowly, as this becomes clear, the heart begins to turn naturally towards what is steady. This turning is not forced; it happens through clarity.
The restlessness we feel does not come from having many responsibilities, but from depending on many supports. We hold on to different things for security, and in doing so, the mind becomes divided. Even when one support feels uncertain, we shift to another, but the underlying instability remains. In this way, the search continues, but without true rest. And because there is no single grounding, the heart remains subtly unsettled.
But when we turn towards Mā Devī, something begins to settle within. We begin to feel that there is a presence that does not move with the world. Even as everything changes outside, there is something within that remains quiet and steady. The more we rest in that presence, the less we feel the need to depend on what is changing. There is a quiet recognition: “This alone is enough.” In that understanding, the heart becomes peaceful. A sense of inner completeness begins to replace the need for outer support.
In the spirit of the teachings, what is real is not found in what keeps shifting, but in what always remains. When everything is seen as Her prasāda, even the world is no longer a place of dependence. The heart slowly begins to understand: “I am not here to rely on many supports… I am here to live in Her shelter alone.” This understanding brings a quiet simplicity into life. It removes the strain of holding on in many directions.
Our restlessness continues when we keep turning in many directions. But when the heart begins to stay in one place, even gently, a new steadiness arises. The need to search reduces, and a feeling of belonging begins to grow. This belonging is not created; it is recognised. And once it is felt, even briefly, the heart naturally returns to it again and again.
To live like this does not require leaving anything outwardly, it requires an inner alignment. We continue to live, act, and fulfil our responsibilities. But inwardly, we remain connected to one support. Slowly, a quiet devotion begins to arise, not forced, but natural. A devotion that remains even in change, a devotion that quietly supports us through every experience.
Today’s Sādhanā — Resting in One Shelter: Today, gently notice where the mind seeks support in many places. In those moments, pause and turn within. Ask softly, “Where am I truly resting?” Let this question bring clarity. Before any action, inwardly say, “Mā Devī, let my heart rest only in You.” Let your actions continue, but let your dependence become simple. At least a few times during the day, close your eyes briefly and feel, “I am at the feet of Mā Devī. I belong here.” Do not force this feeling, just return to it gently.
Inner Bhāva: Do not try to withdraw from the world; simply let your heart rest in one place. Let your connection with Her become steady. Offer all your dependencies at Her feet. Even if the mind wanders, return gently. Each return deepens your devotion.
Reflection for Today: Did I seek support in many places today, or did I remain at the feet of Mā Devī?
Gentle Reminder: Come back to Her feet again and again, not by rejecting the world, but by not depending on it. Nothing is ours, everything is Hers, and in that one shelter, peace becomes deep.
